Craft room renovations

Hello ceiling, bye bye floor!

Just when one thing is looking good, the next thing is not!  Ah, I'm exaggerating of course!  The fabulous builders have put the ceiling in now, filling the gaps with lots of insulation to keep us cosy toasty in the winter.  The next step was to lift the floorboards, for a number of reasons. First, as previously mentioned, the gorgeous floor is going to be restored and retained.  Given that the boards need to be lifted to sort cables and gas pipes, it makes sense to lift the whole floor and take it to the workshop to be sanded [...]

Discoveries from times long past

Taking apart the room has resulted in some interesting discoveries!  The ceiling came down as you've seen, and we found an old cigarette pack (empty, before you ask!).  The brand Capstan appears to have first appeared in the UK in 1894, and the packet we found seems to be dated around 1920-1930, so around 100 years old!  (If you're interested, more information about Capstan can be found here.) In the UK there is a fabulous supplier called Creations by Rod who makes units designed for Kallax and [...]

Fireplace musings

So, off the back of the discovery of the gorgeous floor, my plans for underfloor heating went out of the window.  The new question became - how to heat this room?  We had already decided that the old radiator would come down.  For those who have been in my room before, chances are you never even spotted the radiator.  It was under the shelving unit where my stamps were stored and was continuously blocked by various boxes, so it's a miracle we didn't freeze in that room!  That wall will now have a desk, so one possibility is to [...]
